Who are you?
Many of you are familiar with this famous line from the 70’s rock group “The Who” or from hearing this in the opening soundtrack of the hit TV series “CSI”. I have it titled as a question here and believe this to be the launching query of many a philosopher. I believe it was Socrates who is credited with expanding on the statement, γνῶθι σεαυτόν – “know thyself”. He taught that, “the unexamined life is not worth living”
Do you have a proper handle on who you are today? You and I are very unique beings. We are fearfully and wonderfully made and loved by our gracious Creator God. He continues to demonstrate to us daily his mercy by giving us life & breath. “That they should seek the Lord, if happily they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.” Acts 17:27-28
Without launching into a full blown sermon, but with just a little research I’ve come across three important character traits we need to keep in mind when we answer a portion of the “who are you” question. As a prelude, if you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are called a child of God and a friend of God (John 1:12; James 2:23).
Here are the three passages that clearly state who we are in the Lord (emphasis mine):
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
” But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.” 1 Thessalonians 5:8
” Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:5
In closing, we are called, of the day, and kept by God and for God! This has truly encouraged my spirit. I pray you look and meditate on these “trait truths” and give God thanks while actively living out these convictions.
Sincerely, Pastor Larry
