What Do You See In The Mirror?
“But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face in a mirror; for he looks at himself, goes away, and right away forgets what kind of man he was. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer who acts–this person will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:22-25
In my neighborhood there is a small “Y-shaped” intersection where one avenue has a stop sign and the other does not. We happen to live on the avenue with the stop. Sometimes due to the angle it has been very challenging to see if any traffic is coming along, so it can be a little dicey to pull out onto the main avenue. Over the years there have been different partial solutions, but a couple of years ago, and very nice convex mirror was placed on the opposing side of the road where you can easily see if any traffic is heading through. I am sure that I’m not the only one who can appreciate the benefits of this “new safety” design. You would be correct in assuming, if one chose to ignore looking at said mirror and passes through this intersection there might be some impending consequence. It would be gambling with your and any passenger’s safety.
The correlation is very easy to make spiritually here for us. Once you acknowledge that God’s Word, the Bible is a mirror to our soul, one is confronted with the “traffic” around us that can be detrimental to our spiritual health if not heeded. The Bible is a powerful tool that God has provided for our safety and security. It is a mirror that shows our flaws and weaknesses and if we will take time to study the Bible and heed its “traffic” instruction we are better off for it in so many ways.
God bless you as you give attention to God’s Word and see the image it’s reflecting. May we be doers of His Word! – Pastor Larry
