Ultimate Workout!

Reading in the book of Philippians we come across these verses:  “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:12-13

Many of you know I am trying to be faithful to a regular fitness routine. I do my best to workout for about one hour each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

God’s Word persuades us to “take care of the temple” God has given us.

I see five principles in the Bible passage above that speaks to an ultimate workout for us spiritually.

First, I need to Mind My Own Business, knowing that I can only legitimately compare myself to Jesus and no one else.  I strive to remove the plank in my own eye instead of attempting to remove the splinter from my brother’s.

Second, I need to Move Into My Own Joy. I will not wait for external things to improve my feelings but will take the initiative to activate the joy that is already in my heart from the Holy Spirit.  As David did, I will encourage myself in the Lord today!

Third, I will Minimize My Own Stress.  Working out my own salvation means that it is up to me to “let not my heart be troubled”.  No matter what happens today, I make the choice to walk in peace.  Accepting the fact that I can’t control what others do or say to me, I exercise y ability to control how I let what they do or say affect me.

Fourth, I will Measure My Own Progress.  Whatever strides I make toward success in God today will only be done to please Him and for my own satisfaction.  I will work OUT what God has done IN me, regardless of the praise or criticism of others.

Fifth and last, I will Manage My Own Personality.   He who rules his spirit is greater than he who takes a city (Proverbs 16:32).  I will celebrate and accentuate my strengths with acceptance and understanding of my limitations.

Will you follow me in this Ultimate Workout?
