To Love Is To Give
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…,” John 3:16
During the season of Super Bowl I, the great quarterback Bart Starr had made a deal with his oldest son. For every perfect paper Bart Jr. brought home from school, Starr gave him ten cents. After a particularly rough game against St. Louis in which Starr felt he had played poorly, returned home weary and battered. But he couldn’t help feeling better when he reached his bedroom. There, attached to his pillow, was a note: Dear Dad, I thought you played a great game. Love, Bart. Taped to the note were two dimes.
Why did Bart Jr. leave those dimes for his dad? Did he think they were adequate compensation for a hard-fought battle on the gridiron? No. He left the dimes simply because he loved his dad. He wanted his dad to know that no matter how he played, Bart Starr had a son who thought he was worth something special.
God exemplified this very kind of giving. Out of His love for us, He gave. John 3:16 tells us that God loved us so much, He sent His only Son to die for our sins. He didn’t give us His Son, Jesus Christ, because we had earned Him. God was simply motivated out of love. How then should this principle affect our motivation for giving to God?
