This last week I’ve witnessed at least two different drivers on the road give an enthusiastic “thumbs up” to the driver in front or next to them while on State Road 41. Both were showing their approval to the political stickers/monikers that were displayed on the vehicle. I later wondered where did the “thumbs up” gesture come from? It is widely believed that this originates from the gladiatorial fights of ancient Rome, in which the destiny of a losing gladiator was decided by the crowd. Thumbs up, he lived. Thumbs down -he died.
There is Greek word found in our Bibles that reflects the general idea of the thumbs up. It is the word sphragizō. It is the word sealed or stamped as in a signet ring stamp of approval or authentication. In John 6:27 Jesus states, “Labor not for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal (or approval).”
It is a blessing to have someone give us a “thumbs up” or some physical sign of approval, but may we strive for what Jesus instructed. That is God’s “Thumbs up” for us and our life work.
Genuinely hoping to hear “well done” from Jesus one day, Pastor Larry
