Thermonuclear!

80 years ago this last Wednesday the nuclear bomb “Little Boy” detonated over Hiroshima (August 6, 1945), and “Fat Man” detonated three days later over Nagasaki on August 9.  Little Boy caused heat to 7,200 Fahrenheit = 4,000 degrees Celsius.  The Fat Man heat was similar.  Little Boy was a uranium, gun-type weapon.  They had only enough uranium for one gun-type weapon.  Fat Man was a plutonium, implosion-style weapon.  This was the nuclear weapon the United States used for nuclear weapons numbers 2-8.  These eight were the first detonations in history.  Each one caused a “fission” explosion and are generally called “atomic” bombs.  Six days after Nagasaki Japan surrendered on August 15. 

The first two nuclear weapons served a good purpose – they saved way more lives than they took.  Indirectly, they also, by God’s providence, grace, and mercy, brought the gospel to Japan more than ever before.

On November 1, 1952, the first “fusion” (also labeled “thermonuclear” or “hydrogen”) bomb (Mike) was first detonated by the United States.

These thermonuclear weapons can be thousands of times more powerful than fission bombs.  Fission involves splitting atoms, while fusion involves combining them.

Modern Hydrogen bombs can make a peak heat 100 million degrees Celsius – much hotter than the core of the sun which is 15 million degrees Celsius. 

Modern nuclear weapons can incorporate both fission and fusion processes to maximize their explosive power.  We live in a dangerous world.  But the good news is that all the bombs man has ever made are nothing compared to the power of Jesus Christ, the God-man.  Without Him, all the power ever known could not save one person.  We have the Salvation message that can start the process.
