Spider and the web

A few days ago while sitting on my deck in the sun recovering from a bad sinus throat and chest cold, I realized that I had leaned back into a spider web.  It was a good enough size one that I wrestled with getting all the web out of my hair for about a half a minute or so.  Yuk!  I don’t hate spiders, but I do hate the weird sense of being “caught in the webbing” of some arachnid.

A day later while bike riding I noticed at least three different yards had spider web decorations set up.  Although I’ve grown accustomed to seeing decorations such as these in the weeks drawing up to Halloween, it still intrigues me as to what prompts people to decorate a yard with something we’d normally “dust away” as a nuisance to keeping a clean space.

When thinking about our spiritual enemy it’s easy to correlate the devices of the devil with him being similar in nature to a spider intentionally placing webs around, looking to easily snatch any in his web of ruin.

In the book of Job we find an interesting comparison that involves the spider: “Such are the paths of all who forget God; the hope of the godless shall perish. His confidence is severed, and his trust is a spider’s web.  He leans against his house, but it does not stand; he lays hold of it, but it does not endure.” Job 8:13-15

The moral takeaway I suppose is,  for all of us to be on guard and not forget to be clothed in God’s armor.  May we be prepared for the schemes and traps the devil is constantly laying out near us. Pastor Larry
