Paul, Timothy & Saint Patrick
“And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” 2Timothy 2:2
This reflects the discipleship model Jesus lived out. Just as Jesus taught and discipled others, so did the Apostle Paul, with Timothy as a key mentee. This instruction, penned by Paul, extends to all mature Christians. Saint Patrick (who is somewhat revered tomorrow) understood and practiced the evangelism & discipleship taught by our Savior.
You may know some things about Saint Patrick, but here are a few lesser-known details. According to William J. Bennett, Patrick, a British-born 16-year-old, was captured by Irish raiders and sold into slavery. During this time, he assimilated into Irish culture. After much prayer, he escaped to Britain but later felt called in a dream to return and spread the gospel. Facing rejections, hardships, and even 12 imprisonments, Patrick eventually baptized thousands and established churches across Ireland.
Years later, Columba—one of Ireland’s “Twelve Apostles”—continued Patrick’s legacy, discipling over 3,000 followers. He later took the gospel to Scotland, where he planted churches and monasteries, mediated royal disputes, and transcribed 300 books. “Nobody did more to Christianize Scotland than Columba.” (Saint Patrick Confessions 16, CCEL)
We all can/should have a “Timothy” that we are discipling and helping to grow in serving our Lord. It is obviously God’s plan in the New Testament.
