Now Thank We All Our God
At the height of a severe plague in 1637, Martin Rinkart, thought to be the only surviving pastor in the German town of Eilenberg, Saxony, conducted as many as 50 funerals a day and performed more than 4000 funerals in that year, including that of his precious wife, the mother of his children.
In the midst of famine, plague and the invading armies of the 30 years war he wrote, “Now thank we all our God.”
Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done, in whom His world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.
O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us,
to keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all ills of this world in the next.
All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,
the Son and Spirit blest, who reign in highest heaven
the one eternal God, whom heaven and earth adore;
for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
May we remember gratitude is to be expressed regardless of circumstances not because of circumstances.
“in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Pastor Larry
