Music For The Soul
If you are anything like me, you enjoy skillfully played uplifting music. Our son hosted about 16 of his friends at our house the other day. Around half of this group participated in Jazz band this past year. Janie and I enjoyed hearing their performances at Venice High a few months back. So, we agreed to let them set up in our living room to play their instruments and sing. They had a great deal of fun and most of what they played was enjoyable to us.
The Bible has much to say about music. We need to remember that God created music. Some music implicitly honors God, some music stirs up good emotions and some “music” can be easily identified as unwholesome and destructive.
I love the emphasis of Psalm 98 which states,
“Shout to the Lord, all the earth; break out in praise and sing for joy! Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song, with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn. Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King!” Psalm 98:4,5
We find the reason this instruction is given in the surrounding verses: “Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power! The Lord has announced his victory and has revealed his righteousness to every nation! He has remembered his promise to love and be faithful to Israel. The ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with fairness.” Psalm 98:1-3,9
