Life is very unpredictable; death can surprise, too…
It came to my attention this week that NFL coach John Madden died December 28, 2021, at the age of 85. The timing of his death seems uncanny in the sense that a stellar documentary on his life was finished recently. I am told that the producers waited to release the video journal of his life and planned for him to see it with his family before the public Christmas season release.
John Madden was a former NFL broadcaster who worked for every major network and legendary Hall of Famer ex-coach of the Oakland Raiders. He later came out with a top-selling video game. According to John Madden, he has always had Christian ideas and faith. I don’t have access to any of his final words before his passing, but I thought it might be inspiring to look at the words of a few others:
Quote: Robert The Bruce, King of Scotland (1274-1329): “Now, God be with you, my dear children. I have breakfasted with you and shall sup with my Lord Jesus Christ.”
Quote: John Antler: “The chariot has come, and I am ready to step in.”
Quote: D.L. Moody: “This is glorious! Earth receding, Heaven opening. God calling me!”
One of the Apostle Paul’s last words before his martyrdom and death are from 2Timothy 4:7-8. He wrote: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
May we live our lives in such a way that we have few to no regrets and anticipate our glorious journey into eternity.
