Compared to his brother, He was a Saint

The book of Proverbs instruct us that,  “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold. The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all. A prudent man foresees the evil, and hides himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished. By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.” Proverbs 22:1-4

There were two brothers, well known around town for their crooked business dealings and underworld connections.  They were as mean and cold-blooded as you can imagine.  One day, one of the brothers died, and the surviving brother wanted to give his dead brother a funeral fit for a king.  He called the funeral home and made all the arrangements.  Then he called on a minister in town he knew and made him an offer, as they say, he couldn’t refuse.  He said, “I will give your church $10,000 toward that new roof you need if, in eulogizing my brother, you call him a saint.”

The minister surprisingly agreed.  The whole town turned out for the funeral it seemed.  The minister began:  “The man you see in this coffin was a vile and debauched individual.  He was a liar, a thief, a deceiver, a manipulator, a reprobate, and a hedonist.  He destroyed the fortunes, careers, and lives of countless people in this city, some of whom are here today. This man did every dirty, rotten thing you can think of, but compared to his brother, he was a saint.”

I pray that you and I will have many honorable things said about us at our memorials after we cross into eternity.
