Calm after the Storm
The difference a few days make after a major storm going through our area is amazing. Many of us were “hunkered down” nine days ago wondering how the hurricane would affect our homes and local community. I was amused at a few of my family members who ventured out late at night about the time that the winds and rising water were finishing their destruction. An hour later curiosity got the better of me and I headed out to see how high the water level got in my neighborhood. I was surprised by what I saw. We witnessed four (4) inches of water on the side street (two blocks away) and saw various types of debris strewn about.
Three days later and feeling a little better, I took off on a bike ride to explore. There were a few hazards I maneuvered around, but eventually made it to one of the local beaches. It was one of the most peaceful experiences I’ve ever had. I had to marvel at God’s creation and give Him thanks. I also noted how calm the waters were and enjoyed the light breeze. It was such a contrast from just a few days ago!
I’ll leave two applicable passages for us to ponder:
“For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:4-6,12
“Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” Psalm 30:4-5
May we appreciate the moments for what they are. If you are going through some “storm of life”, take heart and hope in the God who calms our storms.
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Mark 4:39
