Bigger, Better Hammer!

A missionary friend of mine related a frustrating moment in some renovation at his son’s home.

“If nothing else works, get a bigger or better hammer!

I was helping my son make some repairs on his house the other day. It is a prewar house. There was a situation where I needed to set a big nail in a very narrow place. There was no clearance for a hammer, and he didn’t have a nail gun. So, I loaded up a pointed chisel in his drill hammer, set it to hammer function, carefully lined up the chisel to the nail and drove it home. Necessity is the mother of invention.”

This reminds me of the lesson I continue to learn in my Christian Walk.  Too many times, I feel “my plan” is great and will be what works best.  The reality is that God’s plans are always “bigger and better” than our own, meaning his ways are superior to our understanding and lead to greater good and fulfillment. 

Two passages of scripture easily come to mind for our support:

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways.” This is the LORD’s declaration.  (9)  “For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21

May we speedily acknowledge that God’s ways are Bigger,
