The Symbol – Our Flag
Our patriotic response to our American flag is an interesting topic. I find it encouraging when I watch an event (ball game or auto race) that starts with acknowledging our country’s flag and the freedom and sacrifice it represents. Flag Day is a holiday celebrated on June 14 in the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777
Other countries around the world have various levels of passion to honor their flags, but it seems like America is unique. We identify ourselves in pride with our country through flying the flag and acknowledging it when appropriate.
A spiritual metaphor and lesson we can find in comparison is that we should be humbly proud to be in the family of God. The Bible does mention us as citizens of heaven and even soldiers in God’s army.
God has left us some encouragement and challenge for us as we identify ourselves as spiritual citizens. We are promised in Psalm 60 “You(God) have set up a banner for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow. Selah” Psalm 60:4
Also, instructions are given in 2 Timothy 2 where God states: “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 2Timothy 2:2-4
