Burned at the Stake

John Rogers stands as a radiant example of Christian courage—a man whose convictions were anchored not in comfort, but in the unshakable truth of God’s Word. As the editor and translator behind the Matthew Bible, he helped bring Scripture into the hands of ordinary believers, knowing full well that such work placed him in danger. His life reminds Christians today that gospel clarity is always worth the cost.

Rogers’ steadfastness shone brightest when the pressure to recant grew fiercest. Under Queen Mary I, he was imprisoned for his Protestant faith, yet he refused to deny the truth he had preached and translated. Even as he was led to the stake in 1555—becoming the first Protestant martyr of Mary’s reign—eyewitnesses recorded that he walked with calm resolve, strengthened by the hope of Christ. His courage was not loud or theatrical; it was the quiet strength of a man convinced that Scripture is worth living and dying for.

For believers today, John Rogers offers a stirring call to faithfulness. His life urges Christians to treasure the Bible, to stand firm when truth is costly, and to trust that Christ sustains His people in every trial. Rogers’ legacy is not merely one of martyrdom, but of joyful obedience—an enduring reminder that God uses ordinary servants to accomplish extraordinary kingdom work.

“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,…” Ephesians 6:14

This brief character sketch should remind us to review our convictions and stand courageously for Christ, Pastor Larry
